THE COLLECT FOR TODAY
Almighty God, who called your church to bear witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself, help us to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be drawn to you; through him who was lifted up on the cross and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit - one God, now and forever. Notices and Forthcoming Events
CANCER RESEARCH UK: This charity has a newly-opened store where Argos used to be on the Westwood Gateway Retail Park. They are in urgent need of household items which they are happy to receive in store between 21st August and 3rd September. Please have a rummage through your cupboards and on your shelves and see what you no longer need!
RIDE AND STRIDE: On Saturday 9th September, this annual sponsored event will take place: it involves either cycling or walking to as many churches as possible, and, if the weather is fine, it is a very enjoyable event.
Sponsor forms are in churches now. Please ask.
St Mark’s, St Catherine’s and also St Laurence church are looking for volunteers to man the churches between the hours of 10am and 6pm/4pm in order to greet the participants and to sign the sponsor forms. It is feasible for this to be sponsored also. And it would be great if some of us could volunteer a little extra time to man St Christopher’s as well (please contact Kevin Spain about this). Thanks to those folk who have already put themselves forward, I know that St Catherine’s has had a good response for this.
Some of the money raised by this event goes to the CofE and a percentage comes back to the parish in which it was raised. Please contact your church warden if you are able to offer any time to have our churches open on this day. Suggestion: what about having a shared lunch?
THANET DEANERY MEETING & ROADSHOW: Tuesday 12th September between 2pm and 4pm at Holy Trinity, Margate. This is a great opportunity for the Deanery to come together with the Bishop and Diocesan Team. This is an open meeting and all are welcome!
The Diocese are also running three workshops:
Use of church buildings and creating new Christian communities: To look at a process that anticipates the role of buildings in the future and explores a different deployment. Topics will include festival church, shared church space with external bodies by faculty, shared church spaces with other denominations, church planting/revitalising - creating new Christian communities and church closure.
Engaging with financial planning: To look at the parish share formula and allocation for 2024, to explore the mechanics of giving and the dynamics of generosity
Including and welcoming children and young people: Principles and practical steps for Including and welcoming children and young people wherever they are: transforming our welcome in church, working with schools and thinking about growing faith within households.
SAVE THE DATES: St Lawrence Clock Restoration Appeal.
Saturday 16th September: The Thanet Male Voice Choir are giving a concert in aid of the St Lawrence Clock Restoration Appeal and Pancreatic Cancer Research at the Sarah Thorne Theatre in Broadstairs. Tickets £12.00 each in advance from www.sarahthornetheatre.co.uk or £14.00 on the night.
Saturday 21st October: Quiz Night in the Parish Hall.
Friday 3rd November: Concert in St Laurence church - more details nearer the time of each event.
If you are unable to get along to any of the mentioned events or wish to make a regular monthly donation, remember you can donate direct to the clock restoration fund by bank transfer/online banking or standing order. The bank account is with Lloyds Bank in the name of Ramsgate Heritage Regeneration Trust, sort code 30-98-90 account number 18498668. Thank you for all your support. Freda Parker
HERITAGE WEEKENDS: You will find many local activities associated with this annual event. St Laurence will be open on both 9th and 16th September offering a Church Tour at 10am and a Churchyard Tour at 2pm. St John’s Church, Margate, is also part of this event and David Lammler (who was involved with our Music Extravaganza at St Catherine’s) will be playing the organ twice on Saturday 9th September at 11am and at 1pm, then on Sunday 10th at 1.30pm.
TALK by MARGARET BOLTON: “Unsinkable People” – an illustrated talk will be delivered at St George’s church on Saturday, 15th September at 3pm. The theme will be the stories of around thirty people who survived the sinking of the Titanic, particularly those from the East Kent area, one who was baptised at St George’s and another who attended Chatham House School. Please book a place through the church - £5 towards church funds, which will include refreshments.
